TIME AND TIME AGAIN
You say you’ve seen it, say you’ve done it
Say you know what it’s like
You say you’ve got it in your pocket
But I think it’s a lie
And all the anecdotes you overwrote
Are creeping through your pores
Stepping in through open doors
I don’t know why I’m wasting my time
On a merry-go-round with my feet off the ground
But it feels too real to let go
Time and time again, proven to be true
We remake our mistakes the way we were born to do
(All you’ve seen, it all seems to fade away)
(All you’ve been, it all seems to fade away)
You say you want it, gotta have it
And you ain’t giving in
It’s not a problem, just a habit
But it’s wearing you thin
And all the antidotes you overdose
Are chipping you away
All your edges start to fray
I don’t know why I’m wasting my time
On a merry-go-round with my feet off the ground
But it feels too real to let go
Time and time again, proven to be true
We remake our mistakes the way we were born to do
Time would be a witness if you showed your spine
And I could forge forgiveness if you spoke your mind
Time and time again, proven to be true
We remake our mistakes the way we were born to do
MEANWHILE
So much bad news on every screen
That you start to believe you woke up in a dream
Every day kinda feels like it might be your last
When you spend all your time getting lost in the past
Maybe it’s time to let it go
Maybe it’s time to breathe
Sailing through oceans of smoke on my own
Maybe it’s time to be
Meanwhile
Meanwhile the world turns, we let it all burn
We don’t ever wanna fight, only ever wanna die on our own terms
Meanwhile the world turns, we watch the lawn burn
We don’t ever wanna fight, only ever wanna die on our own terms, own terms
They’re leading the lambs to the slaughter
So lock up your sons and your daughters
One day they’ll remember what they oughta
What his mother taught him, what her father bought her
Once you bleed into the water all the sharks’ll come in
Start to wonder why you never bothered learning to swim
Maybe one day I’ll decide to take a dive on a whim
Just hoping to skim the surface
Maybe it’s time to let it go
Maybe it’s time to breathe
Sailing through oceans of smoke on my own
Maybe it’s time to be
Meanwhile
So give me advice and I’ll take it
Or perhaps enough money to make it
But give me your heart and I’ll break it
In some way or another
And I’m really trying my best here
In my shelter I wait for the all-clear
Something feels so out of place here
I feel like I’m being chased here
Meanwhile the world turns, we let it all burn
We don’t ever wanna fight, only ever wanna die on our own terms
Meanwhile the world’s aflame, we played the long game
We don’t ever wanna fight, only ever wanna die on our own terms, own terms
Meanwhile the world turns
Meanwhile the world burns
SHOWERED IN DOUBT
I detect an echo of a lie on your tongue
Maybe it’s my ego, but I’m inclined to run
Forget forgiveness, your wrath is all you need
I’ve been a witness to your love’s greed
Forget forgiveness, a path is all you need
To follow down with me
You’re on my mind every time I feel like I’ve figured it out
Now I’m showered in doubt
Architect of fiction, is there truth in your lie?
A walking contradiction, I see it pass me by
Forget forgiveness, your wrath is all you need
I’ve been a witness to your love’s greed
Forget forgiveness, a path is all you need
To follow down with me
You’re on my mind every time I feel like I’ve figured it out
Now I’m showered in doubt
Believe me, I’m bleeding
Yet breathing, I’m leaving
You’re on my mind every time I feel like I’ve figured it out
Now I’m showered in doubt
EXPECTATION (DO I DEFY?)
A bone of contention to keep in the attic
Hearing your voice in television static
Decoding messages printed in prose
Always the feeling you’re never alone
Skin on my body, I’m gone in my head
All of the wolves are waiting to be fed
They’ve come to rip me and tear me apart
It’s over before I could start
Do I defy your expectation?
‘Cause you caught my eye but I passed you by
With no hesitation
Consulting the mirror and hoping to see
Something that’s still recognisably me
Such things are bred in captivity
Knock your longevity down by a good few years
I’ve had enough time to sit and to think
Plenty of decades are gone in a blink
Where will you go if you can’t find me now?
If I never tell you how
Do I defy your expectation?
‘Cause you caught my eye but I passed you by
With no hesitation
White noise fills my body up and I can’t drown it out
Seems to have me praying though I’ve never been devout
I never thought, I never thought that it would end like this
I never thought, I never thought that it would end like this
Do I defy your expectation?
‘Cause you caught my eye but I passed you by
With no hesitation
BETTER THAN THIS
Getting cold, my spirit sold, I start to slip away
Inside a cage of ribs I kept a beast
And she snips heartstrings like clipping wings
They’re freshly tuned to play
It seems to keep her occupied at least
Try as I might to retire at night
I’ve been setting myself up to fail
She moves with the breeze and she departs with ease
But her breath couldn’t power the sail
A fresh sun is rising above the horizon
With no destination in sight
In circles we travel and start to unravel
Delirium’s born in the night
Shallow as a shot glass, we shattered on the ground
Hollow like a high pass filter on the sound
I am only half-here, something is amiss
But I don’t think it’s going to get better than this
Woke up Wednesday morning, broken bed frame’s made us sore
She picks another face from piles of laundry on the floor
And I can’t help but miss the girl she was the week before
She’s coming around again, another stranger to the door
I’m growing tired of wanting more, these roots have failed to take
And now the seeds are sewn at least it wasn’t my mistake
She moves and twists, she’s unrestrained like grapes on winding vine
But in my haste I didn’t taste the poison in the wine
Shallow as a shot glass, we shattered on the ground
Hollow like a high pass filter on the sound
I am only half-here, something is amiss
But I don’t think it’s going to get better than this
I don’t think it’s gonna get better than this
(Saccharine lips, venomous kiss)
I don’t think it’s gonna get better than this
(Childish games, swing and a miss)
I don’t think it’s gonna get better than
Shallow as a shot glass, we shattered on the ground
Hollow like a high pass filter on the sound
I am only half-here, something is amiss
But I don’t think it’s going to get better than this
It was less of a ‘goodbye,’ more ‘never again’
But time didn’t stop, the world didn’t end
I kept on living as I had before
Once I’d scrubbed out the stains that you left on my floor
In public I passed you, I quickened my stride
But couldn’t decipher the look in your eye
When I had you, I gave it my best
But these days I understand less
THE LIGHTHOUSE
An underwater town where the people never drown
I can’t figure out how you survive
Quietly written off the map when you fell into the trap
Now it’s just a way to feel alive
One more try
Dying in a daydream
Sleeping in the slipstream
Giving the last of what you had
To something bad for you
But what could I, what could I do?
When it’s all you know
And you know you’ve got to get by
But will it ever be enough?
A stranger’s silhouette is asking for a cigarette
I think he needs is more than me
And sympathy is duty-free
Body’s been eroding like the coast
You’ve become the ordinary ghost
It’s not my place to understand
I’ve lived my whole life on the land
Dying in a daydream
Sleeping in the slipstream
Giving the last of what you had
To something bad for you
But what could I, what could I do?
When it’s all you know
And you know you’ve got to get by
But will it ever be enough?
A teaspoon of Neptune could wash you away
From your saline daydream you’ve drifted astray
Your captain’s been calling but you can’t hear him
For you’re captive and caught in the mess you've been
Dying in a daydream
Sleeping in the slipstream
And all you ever had
Was only bad for you
Running for the lighthouse
Resting in the shark’s mouth
It’s all gotten a bit too much now
Run, run, run
Run into the light, run into the light
Oh holy concrete corner
Furthest from the sun
The water’s come to cleanse me
But the deal is done
BRINGING IT ON
You defeat me, you complete me
You are everything I shouldn’t like
You erase me, you deface me
I tried, I couldn’t see the other side
So I’ll keep
Bringing it on with you
(Bringing it on, we’re bringing it on)
Breaking it off with you
(Breaking it off, we’re bringing it on)
Getting along with you
(Bringing it on, we’re bringing it on)
Then I’m breaking it off with you
(Breaking it off, we’re bringing it on)
You evade me, you persuade me
You make nothing look like quite a lot
You betray me, you decay me
I rot, you’re everything I haven’t got
Bringing it on with you
(Bringing it on, we’re bringing it on)
Breaking it off with you
(Breaking it off, we’re bringing it on)
Getting along with you
(Bringing it on, we’re bringing it on)
Then I’m breaking it off with you
(Breaking it off, we’re bringing it on)
I said I’d give it so I’m giving it all, I’m giving it all
I’m giving it all and you can take me away
Bringing it on with you
(Bringing it on, we’re bringing it on)
Breaking it off with you
(Breaking it off, we’re bringing it on)
Getting along with you
(Bringing it on, we’re bringing it on)
Then I’m breaking it off with you
(Breaking it off, we’re bringing it on)
OLD SCARS
Call me necromancer, I’m communing with the dead
Calling on the spirits that reside inside my head
The eye that guides the mind is not a blessing in disguise, it lies
Can’t predict the future, I’m without a crystal ball
But how can I know peace if I can never know it all?
Studying the sequence of the rising and the fall, frightful
I don’t want to love if it ends in pain
I’m fighting the feeling that it’s in vain
And I told myself I wouldn’t try again
But here we are, cutting over the old scars
The black dog may be sleeping but I’ll never let him lie
For the secrets that I’m keeping never wither, never die
Neverending is the circle that’s been running rings around my mind
Creeping down my body is a different kind of cold
Keeps me from the present though my bones are growing old
Dripping from my fingers is a story never told, unsolved
I don’t want to love if it ends in pain
I’m fighting the feeling that it’s in vain
And I told myself I wouldn’t try again
But here we are, cutting over the old scars
So keep me at an arm’s distance
I don’t require assistance
The path of least resistance
Keep me an at arm’s distance
I don’t want to love if it ends in pain
I’m fighting the feeling that it’s in vain
And I told myself I wouldn’t try again
But here we are, cutting over the old scars
The old scars, the old scars
The old scars, we open the old scars
EXTRATERRESTRIAL
I packed my bags for planet Earth
‘Cause I had to burst my bubble universe
It’s time I started running, ‘cause I can hear them coming
I think they’re coming for me
It’s time I started running, cause I could hear them come in
I think they’re coming for me
And I am ready for the countdown
(Three, two, one, I’m gone)
I feel like an extraterrestrial
‘Cause I’m so out of place in the human world
Maybe you could take me to your leader
Maybe you could take me to your leader
I tried to shed my skin, to free the alien within
But I couldn’t shift my shape or choose the form I’d rather take
It’s time I started running, ‘cause I can hear them coming
I think they’re coming for me
It’s time I started running, cause I could hear them come in
I think they’re coming for me
And I am ready for the countdown
(Three, two, one, I’m gone)
I feel like an extraterrestrial
‘Cause I’m so out of place in the human world
Maybe you could take me to your leader
Maybe you could take me to your leader
I feel alienated and spatially frustrated
I don’t know what I’m doing, I don’t know what I’m doing here
My face illuminated, chemically sedated
I don’t know what I’m doing, I don’t know what I’m doing here
I am not man, not machine, not a mind
I am leaving this place and the earthlings behind
I am sick of the sirens and pigs in the streets
With chips on their shoulders and quotas to meet
See the rich ones a feasting on blood of the poor
All their bellies have burst but they’re hungry for more
And the war, and the war shakes your bones through the floor
‘Til the button gets pressed and the world is no more
It’s a bore, it’s a chore and I’ve stopped keeping score
‘Cause the data’s corrupted, it’s riddled with flaws
I’d set sail for Nibiru, make do with the moon
But I’ve landed, I’m stranded, a stranger marooned
ZONE OF ALIENATION
Seasons changing overnight are burdened by atomic blight
The winter’s come to never end and spring will not begin again
Reactor four began to burn, when fallout came the tables turned
And to this day no one could look upon the elephantine foot
Disaster strikes and the people flee
The rising smoke and burnt debris
And silhouetted in the sky
Are blazing towers miles high
A time in living memory
Of Earth stripped bare for all to see
The life and land that’s laid to waste
A sordid scent, metallic taste
In the zone of alienation, too far from home, further from salvation
Glean violent reds from vibrant green
In the zone of alienation, mourning the bones of civilisation
The iodine won’t keep you clean
Mutant birds sing sickened songs about the day the world went wrong
Arisen from the toxic earth, a day of death, a day of birth
Hollow houses, shops and schools do not abide by Earthly rules
For ground we scarcely dare to tread could leave us something worse than dead
A vision of a future world
A finger on a trigger, curled
If only we could stop to think
To patch the holes before we sink
In the zone of alienation, too far from home, further from salvation
Glean violent reds from vibrant green
In the zone of alienation, mourning the bones of civilisation
The iodine won’t keep you clean
Spin upon the Pripyat wheel
Of faded paint and rusted steel
To float above the ravaged ground
And trees of crimson, gold and brown
No broken bones, no spiteful dreams
Could hope to stitch the splitting seams
Of flesh and blood and DNA
We turn to dust and we blow away
In the zone of alienation, too far from home, further from salvation
Glean violent reds from vibrant green
In the zone of alienation, mourning the bones of civilisation
The iodine won’t keep you clean
